 "A little silly" 2009-12-19

You can see the plot and moves coming and they are very predictable...the main character is a little childish and his wife is a little dull...but a good quick read...comic book prose and entertainment without the pictures, but stiil better than TV.

"I like Joseph Finder but I found this novel Slow paced and Predictable - 250 pages in and I'm ready to quite" 2009-12-15
By Opinunated (USA)
I've liked other novels by Joseph Finder.

I did not find "Killer Instinct" very compelling.

I found the story line slow paced and quite predictable:

Story Line: An electronics's company executive meets, by chance, an ex-special forces member with a jaded past. The executive helps this person get a security job at his company. Not very surprisingly, things start falling into place for this executive - his career advances - thanks - in no small part to the gratitude of this new hire. Even less surprising is that this ex-special forces member is using less than ethical methods to advance the career of his benefactor.

After 250 pages --- I'm ready to move on to another novel.

Will there be a conflict between the executive and the ex-special forces operative - of course. But I'm not sure I'll even bother finishing the novel to see the outcome.

Update: I finished the book and it was, as predicted, predictable.

Not recommended.

Slow paced and VERY Predictable.

Finder has written far better novels!

 "Ambivalent" 2009-10-06
By Carol Donaho (Livingston, Tx USA)
This is the story of a guy named Jason Steadman who is a salesman for an electronics company that is being merged with another company based in Japan. His job is in jeopardy. Jason is relatively happy being a salesman but his wife isn't. She wants a bigger house, a bigger salary, a baby. She isn't happy at all. Fate intervenes and Steadman meets an ex Special Forces guy, Kurt, and gets him a job in the security dept. at his company. Now, Kurt is not only a great pitcher for the company team, he can make things happen to help Steadman become more and more successful. As Jason rises quickly through the ranks while others are fired, he begins to wonder about Kurt's role in what is happening around him.

I don't know if it was the Kindle version being hard to read due to the font or just the characters themselves, but I honestly didn't like any of them. Jason was some kind of confused young man who did what people told him to do without having an original thought, his wife was a money grubbing witch, Kurt was not a very nice person although he thought he was. It wasn't until the last 50 pages or so did I gain any respect for either Jason or his wife. These last pages saved the book.

It is a page turner as far as the action is concerned but if you don't care what happens to the characters, it is hard to keep turning those pages.

This is definitely not one of Finder's best - but an average Finder book is better than thousands of others. This will keep your attention and you will want to find out what happens which is why I gave it 3 stars instead of 2 but not good enough for 4. Wait for the price to go down.

"Please do better QC over the formatting" 2009-09-16
By Don (Richmond, VA United States)
I like Finder's books and this one was no exception. However, it is bothersome when the formating is messed up. In many spots, there is a space in the middle of a word or a hyphen, even in the middle of a line. Changing the font size doesn't help either, it's embedded in the ebook.

So far the product seems to work great. I currently have set up 5 items that we keep losing and it picks up their signal from at least 30 feet away without any issues. I have also purchased the pet tags to keep track of my cat in case it darts out the door.

By K. Cunningham
I bought this for my husband who is always losing his wallet or pager or cell phone or something else. I tried to set this up on three different occasions. Always getting the low battery message after turning it on. I tried fully charged rechargeable batteries the first two times I tried to set it up. I tried regular AAA batteries on the third attempt. Why would I use a product to help find things when it won't even let me set it up.

I don't know why it doesn't like rechargeable batteries.

The disks that come with it are great for keys or pagers. Not wallets. They are too thick for a wallet. And you would have to use adhesive tape on your cell phone. yikes!

I fell I got had on this product. I would not recommend it to anyone. I am rather disappointed.

By Benford O. Nance Jr.
More expensive doesn't mean better, and I learned the hard way. This product is designed very poorly. The lock that holds the battery in place is spring-loaded so the battery keeps popping out. The transmitter is made of very cheap plastic and is easily damaged. I purchase another one for a lot less and I am very happy with the results. Don't buy this unless you are willing to spend more money for one to find the transmitter because it doesn't work.

 "Solid Attempt" 2010-01-30
By bluzkat (Philadelphia, PA)
Have to agree with the Publishers Weekly review. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. This faint praise is particularly poignant because all of his previous books were fabulous. I saw the ending coming a mile away. Also, I listened to the audio book version. The reader's voices were really, really, really annoying. Nick Heller's voice was okay, but his SIL and nephew whined their way through the entire book. And it was hard to tell which was which. The voices were almost identical. Everytime they came on, I cringed, and they are on almost every track. So, if you are inclined to read this book, pick up the hardback or paperback. Leave the audio edition on the shelf.

This was the first in a series of books about Nick Heller. Let's hope in the future stories that Finder reestablishes the intrigue, complex characters and psychological thrills that he exhibited in his previous works.

"good but not his best......" 2010-01-06
By BeachReader (Delaware)
A quick and compelling read from first page to last. Some of the business talk left me glassy-eyed (I wonder if all the detail was really necessary) and there were a few mistakes (a woman whose body was totally wrapped up in duct tape had defensive wounds on her hands -- no way!) Some details the reader just has to let slide because they strain credibility. The only character I liked or cared about was Nick, which is a flaw in my opinion. But otherwise, it was a good thriller that kept me guessing.

 "A new enjoyable series" 2010-01-05
By rry007 (Raleigh, N.C)
I picked up this book on a whim and found that I loved it. Roger Heller and his wife, Lauren, are out on date night when both are attacked. Lauren was in a coma for 24 hours, and when she regains consciousness, is in the hospital wondering what happened. Roger, however, has simply disappeared. Their 14 year old son, Gabe, has no idea what to do, and so turns to the one person he trusts to help out his family; his uncle Nick.

Nick Heller and Roger used to be best friends growing up. Their father, the notorious Victor Heller, used to be a billionaire, but was now rotting away in prison on charges or insider trading and securities fraud. Ever since his imprisonment, Roger and Nick have been estranged. Now, Nick must drop everything to find his brother.

Nick is a very likeable character; he is caring, smart, and witty. The more he uncovers, the more confused he gets, and he realizes that things aren't always as they seem. If you like action and intrigue, this is a great book. The surprises are great, and I have to say that I did not see the end coming at all.

"Title should be: Concepts Made Complicated" 2009-03-04
By PhishMan
Ok everyone raves about this book. It is true that this book covers everything you need to know. However, the trick is not to get lost in their ridiculously long explanations that are repeated over and over and over each chapter. Seriously, this book could be condensed to half the size. Further, they mention a couple sentences about a concept and then quit and say "more on this to come later". They probably do that about a thousand times. Truthfully, i just got annoyed by reading the book. It is obnoxious and everything, from their graphs to their flow charts, is made to sound more complicated that it has to be and is encoded in erroneous/needless fluff. Medical students do not have much time, THAT IS TO SAY time is valuable, WHICH MEANS there is not much of it, SO YOU COULD CONCLUDE you should use time efficiently AND THIS MEANS... - if you found the previous sentence pointless and annoying, go with something else, perhaps BRS!

"I ordered "The Textbook of Medical Physiology" 11th edition by Guyton and Hall. The books (a 2 volume set) came but the covers look like they have water damage and the pages look photocopied. The text was supposed to have colored pictures, but they are all black and white. The binding is broken on both of the books and when you open the books the pages are not firmly attached and are falling out in clumps due to binding problems. The covers are not firmly attached to the binding of the book either. Overall, these appear to be copies of the text, and nothing similar to the actual book. It's almost as if it was photocopied and put in a binding. The print doesn't even line up properly on the page The figures are only partially visible, and there is noticeable outlining (like from photo copying). Having seen several copies of the book, this is definitely NOT the original text. ". I sent a few emails which were answered and they refused to refund my money claiming I could have already read the 1000 pages of the text book. Over all I WILL NOT AND WOULD NOT buy anything from this seller.

"every middle school English teacher needs this book" 2004-04-21
By Jessica Riley (Oxford, Ohio United States)
Experienced Cooks don't always use exact recipes to make their finest cuisine, just as experienced teachers don't always use an exact formula to deliver their best lessons. Both have invaluable experience which aids them in their daily jobs. However, for anyone who is starting out as a new chef or teacher, a recipe/formula for "how things should go" allows for the rookie to build confidence while gaining the invaluable experience that's characteristic to the pros. Margaret Finders and Susan Hynds' book, Literacy Lessons: Teaching and Learning with Middle School Students is the "grandma's foolproof cookie recipe" of teaching advice. The authors give you step by step instructions about teaching literacy to middle schoolers, however providing room for your own individuality and creativity to spark the skeleton of ideas that they provide for you.
From instructions on how to join professional organizations to writing prompts that allow you to reflect upon your craft, this book is the "how to" that every language arts pre-service and first year teachers should never be without. Finders and Hynds sprinkle the pages with information, advice, real life case studies, problems, challenges and most importantly, questions that make the reader consider aspects of teaching that have been forgotten or perhaps misplaced in the hustle and bustle of teacher preparation. For example, in one of the fieldwork journals the writing prompt asks you to focus on one class and to describe the students in terms of grade level, age, gender ratio, ethnic diversity, socioeconomic levels, etc.. while keeping in mind questions that you may have about IEP's, the abilities and disabilities of your students, support services, ESL students, social dynamics, and many others. (55-56) This journal entry helps bring questions to the surface that new teachers have but possibly forget to ask their mentor teachers/colleagues, in the whirlwind of lesson planning, meetings, parent conferences, professional development, etc...
Finders and Hynds also give you step by step examples of how to include multiple intelligences into your language arts lessons as well as keep your assessment of students in conjunction with your goals for the students as well as those of the curriculum guide and district and state standards. For example, the authors give suggestions to "secure a copy of the standardized tests given in yours state or school district, (or test booklet depending on the time of the year) and analyze what is required of your students by asking questions such as `What purposes do the test makers suggest the tests serve?, What forms of reading and writing are expected by the students?, Which of your students might have difficulties with parts of the test and how can you minimize this? and How does what your doing in your classroom on a daily basis help or hinder the students as far as this test is concerned?" (137-138) The topics of standards and testing are mentioned and loathed in teacher preparation but rarely does anyone tell you "This is what to do if you have no other idea how to incorporate the standards into your teaching". However, more than just a manual, this book is entertaining and inspiring at the same time as it is useful.
This entertainment is displayed throughout the book with humorous stories but also prevalent at the end of the book, when Finders and Hynds incorporate a few humorous sketches of what a beginning teacher will look like at the beginning of student teaching and how that will compare to weeks 9 and 10. From comfortable shoes to the never-ending coffee drinking, these sketches are realistic, funny and attached to a poster which gives organizational tips as well. (313) Finders and Hynds pack it in for the reader, to give as much assistance as they can. Their teaching insights, combined with exemplary writing skills, push this book to be a great educational tool for anyone considering or entering the profession.
If this wasn't a wealth of information already, Finders and Hynds have done even more leg work to help pre-service teachers secure a job and prepare a professional portfolio. "Margaret conducted telephone interviews with 50 middle school principals and asked them specifically, `What in particular makes one candidate's materials rise to the top of the application files?'". (309) Principals responded with such comments as explicit interest in teaching at the Middle School Level, classroom experiences and evidence of success at the middle school level, abilities to work on teams, abilities to work with students beyond the academics, and many more important insights about how to secure a job in the middle school setting. For anyone considering middle school teaching, this book is a must have and a must read. These two teaching and literacy experts have risen above their normal excellence to provide us with a book that goes straight to the cream of the crop. As I said at the beginning, novice chefs may use a cookbook in their early days of food preparation, novice teachers will use Literacy Lessons: Teaching and Learning with Middle School Students.

 "A pre-calc textbook" 2009-12-13
By Jason Stewart (Southern California, USA)
What can I say...it's a textbook. Chances are you are not buying this one for pleasure reading. It's decent, suffers from the same problems of all math text books, trying to be an encyclopedia and just moving things around from the last edition so that they can sell new copies. But it's a good solid Pre-Calc book.

"It's a good text, but there are probably better ones." 2009-09-12
By Casey Martinson (California City, CA)
I'd say that probably the only flaw I found with this book is that the word problems should be included in the solution's manual because those are quite difficult even starting out in the first chapter.

My Pre-Calculus instructor picked one out and basically it was a Physics problem, which is a class I haven't taken in some time and I think she filled like a board and a half trying to explain it to us (which she didn't do a very good job of). It would help if there were more applications relevant to the word problems in the textbook.

Most of the exercises at the end of each section aren't complicated, but I've noticed that sometimes things that should be in there are not listed as far as I know. Like converting DMS to decimal degrees and all that (it was listed as problems to do but they didn't go over that in the section). Luckily I had already learned that in a previous class and had kept that textbook to see how you'd do it again. I haven't noticed any errors (unless I'm getting the same errors) with the problems in the book. I think they give you a wider scope on what there is to do with what you've just learned, but I think a few more examples would go a long way in furthering the student's knowledge and make it a lot easier to tackle the homework. It'd be good to see the problems done in all sorts of different ways so you can apply what you know to the homework. The graphing ones especially. *Two or three general examples aren't majorly helpful.

Apart from that, I find the book to be a great help in understanding Pre-Calculus. I wouldn't say it'd be one of those books that are a fantastic thing to hold onto if you really enjoy math though like Calculus by Michael Spivak. It will, however, teach you a lot of the technical stuff.

When it come to the subject of pre-calculus mathematics you could do a LOT worse. It's a textbook worth learning from without the need for any supplemental material. It gets helps you learn each concept fairly well and doesn't given you any unnecessary headaches while still being accurate. A nice mix of abstract and practical problems that are well set-up for each topic. The chapters are arranged in a logical order for learning each topic unlike some textbooks I've had to deal with over the years.

I got my book really fast and it was in great shape! Plus a way better deal than the school would have charged.
